The 8th issue of Children's Readings is devoted to the first stage of the formation of local literary criticism of children's literature (1860–1930). The current volume is dedicated to the formation of a system of criteria and categories for the interpretation and assessment of works addressed to children or included in children's reading (O. Luchkina), the formation of the very concept of "children's literature" and its subsequent exploitation in Soviet textbooks of children's literature for higher education (pedagogical and library institutes) (I. Sergienko). V. Golovin demonstrates on the analysis of the works of one critic (M. Gershenzon) and one censor's prohibition (S. Yushkevich "Doves"), how the developed evaluation criteria were cleverly applied by experts to censorship of adult books (V. Golovin), while aesthetic approaches in literary criticism of children's books were supplanted by nomenclature-pedagogical rhetoric (S. Maslinskaya). The important contribution to this discussion can be offered in the publication of a fragment of the annotated index "Critique of Children's Literature 1864-1934" (the "Archive" section).
