The article examines audio productions of fairy tale plays by David Samoilov with music by Boris Tchaikovsky (The Little Elephant Went to Study, The Little Elephant Tourist, Puss in Boots etc.), created by director Antonida Ilyina and released from 1954 to 1978, first on the All-Union radio and then on gramophone records. Samoilov’s plays, written especially for radio, brought new intonations to the style of children’s radio plays, characteristic of the cultural phenomena of the thaw, and, enriched with Tchaikovsky’s music, became a kind of transition from the academic tradition of musical and literary compositions to the emerging genre of children’s musicals. The hidden moral background present in all the tales of the cycle is analyzed, their conflict is revealed, and parallels are drawn between Samoilov’s comedy of everyday masks and the Italian commedia dell’arte. The history and evolution of the joint works of Samoilov and Tchaikovsky are traced; their stylistic uniqueness and artistic features are noted.
