Abstract

Printed board games of the XIXth century are connected with book publishing culture traditions. These games were not only played but also read by the players. All kinds of publications were used for the games (classical literature, educational and patriotic texts, comical stories from recreational literature). For the lotto-type games, specific literature material was required (information about the writers and their literary works, quotations). For dice board games (markers were moved on the boards according to the dice results) creation of common life situations with the help of cultural symbols was more preferable. The plots that met these conditions have formed the basis for popular board games (“The Little Humpbacked Horse”). “The Little Humpbacked Horse” has claimed for the meaningfulness of the book but preserved the competitiveness of a game.
